The Smiths

Não se pode falar do rock inglês dos anos 80 sem mencionar a banda The Smiths. Formada em 1982 na cidade de Manchester por Morrissey [vocal], Johnny Marr [guitarra], Andy Rourke [baixo] e Mike Joyce [bateria], o The Smiths surgiu numa época dominada pelo synth-pop e pelas bandas new wave. Em 1983, a banda lançou o seu primeiro single 'Hand In Glove', pela gravadora Rough Trade, e no ano seguinte sai o álbum de estréia, 'The Smiths'. As letras poéticas e polêmicas de Morrissey [com referências homossexuais] aliadas a ótima música da banda [com destaque para a inspirada guitarra de Marr] fizeram que a banda se tornasse rapidamente a sensação do rock britânico. O álbum seguinte, 'Hatful of Hollow' [uma compilação de singles e raridades], traz alguns dos principais hits da banda: "This Charming Man", "How Soon Is Now?", "Hand in Glove" e "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now". O clássico álbum 'The Queen Is Dead' foi lançado em 1986. E, no ano seguinte, após o lançamento do disco 'Strangeways, Here We Come', a banda se desfez, em conseqüência de desentendimento entre Morrissey e Johnny Marr. Após o fim da banda, Morrissey seguiu carreira solo e Marr formou a banda-projeto Electronic com Bernard Summer [New Order].
